The Eastern regional police command has arrested five persons for allegedly robbing six Chinese at Asuboi in the Suhum municipality.
The suspects, Yegbe Saviour, Richard Offei, Kwaku Djin, Dennis Atta Kwabena Snr and his twin brother, Daniel Atta Kwabena Jnr, allegedly attacked the Chinese contractors who were working on the 1District-1Factory project in the community.
They hit one of the Chinese in the head with a cement block killing him instantly.
The Public Relations Officer of the regional police command, DSP Ebenezer Tettey said on Monday, 15 April 2019 that: “When we arrested them, we retrieved some mobile phones and some dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from their custody.
“We’re aware these Chinese nationals were not only robbed but mobile phones and laptops were also taken from them. So, investigations are ongoing, we want to try as much as possible, to link this persons to what happened there and then we take it from there.
“But they’ve been arrested based on reasonable suspicion because they went to the place, and that evening, the robbery took place. As it is now, we have not concluded our investigations but I can tell you on authority that they’ll be remanded into police custody to enable the police to conduct further investigations into the matter”, he told Accra-based Citi FM.
DSP Tettey also assured the public of the service’s protection for the Chinese contractors while they work on the project.
“Moving forward, we’re going to ensure that, at least, we provide them with security to go about their duties, especially while they’re putting up the factory, which will, in the long run, provide a lot of job opportunities for people in and around Suhum.”
