A 67-year-old grandmother is asking the police to apply the law against her 80-year-old husband, who she claimed impregnated her 50 years ago when she was only a 17-year-old student at a Catholic Convent at Keta.

The woman, Esther Amenyo (not real name), said her 80-year-old husband, Mr. Jonathan Ameley (not real name) truncated her dream of becoming a nun and, therefore, wanted the law to take a retro-active perspective of the issue and deal with the husband accordingly.

Grand-mum Amenyo had reported the case to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police at Tesano in Accra recently.

A reliable police source at DOVVSU, Tesano Police Station, confirmed to the Spectator that, Madam Amenyo had lodged a complaint against the husband.

The source said the police called the two and counselled them to get on well with each other because of their advanced ages, and the fact that they have four elderly children and many grand-children.

The police said if the couple continued with their incessant quarrels, the law would be applied to the letter.

Mr. Ameley, in a chat with the Spectator on Tuesday, at Abelenkpe in Accra, confirmed the accusation but was quick to say that he had compensated his wife enough by making all the documents of his house solely in her name.

He said the wife collects all the rents without giving him a farthing and was surprised why she was pursuing that case against him after. 50 years of marriage.

“I believe, I did the wrong thing at that time. May be, it is God who is punishing me, because there has been turbulence in my marriage for over 45 years," Mr. Ameley said.

He revealed that, at the time of seducing the wife, he was a young well-to-do businessman, with flashy cars and other possessions which he used to lure the wife.
