53 Facilitators of GCBE honoured in Yendi

Fifty-three Facilitators of the Ghana Complementary Basic Education (GCBE) have been honuored at Yendi, in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region.

Some of the facilitators include, Miss Mahama Abibata of Gundogu, Miss Abukari Azaratu of Pansiya, Mr Gmangun Jabab of Kuboni, Mr. Sanja Samuel of Binagmando and Mr Iddi Amiyaw of Kpatia.

The School For Life, of the Ghana Complementary for Basic Education Programme, provided an incentive of a bicycle to meritorious Facilitators and half the cost of a bicycle to the rest. In addition each Facilitator took home a School For Life “T”- Shirt.

Mr. Yaw Waja Peter, the Yendi Complementary Basic Education District Coordinator said the Facilitators were honoured for working voluntarily to provide basic literacy and numeracy skills in the mother tongue of Dagbani and Likpakpaln to out-of school children.

Mr. Waja said this has been done in 53 communities in the Municipality from October 2014 - June 2015, which makes a literacy cycle of nine months under the Ghana Complementary Basic Education Programme.

According to the District Coordinator, the GCBE is an expansion of the School For Life Programme, which works to achieve and sustain increases and equitable access to relevant basic education.

He said is aimed at addressing the challenges of poverty, under development and gender inequality in deprived and under-served communities in the North in particular and other similar areas in the country.

Mr. Waja said they enrolled 1,325 learners, made up of 722 males and 603 females, adding that, they also trained 265 Local Committee Members, made up of 161 females and 104 males, who were sensitized to ensure that the learners attend classes regularly and punctually.

Mr. Sarfo Kantanka, the Yendi Municipal Coordinating Director said the Assembly would ensure that structures are put up at communities where there are no schools and provide wing schools to deserving communities, so that learners in such communities can have access to formal school.

Mr. Sarfo said the Assembly will also provide some incentives such as school bags, uniforms, sandals and exercise books to the girl child so that after transition, they can be retained.

Mr. Nelson Aborigia, the Yendi Municipal Director of Education lauded the initiative of government, through Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service, in implementing the GCBE Programme.

According to the Director, the target groups are out-of –school children aged between 8-14 years, including school drop-outs, who are mostly found in the hard to reach communities.

Mr. Baba Nasam, Municipal Director of Non-Formal Education, urged the teachers to continue giving their best so that every child would have access to education, adding that, if they have access to education, it would reduce poverty and diseases, among others.
