A total of 6,990 candidates comprising 3,306 and 3,684 boys and girls respectively on Monday took part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Tema Metropolis.
Forty-seven public schools in the Metropolis, registered 3,494 candidates, whilst the remaining 3,496candidates were from 109 private schools.
Mr Azeriya G. Ayeriga, the Tema Metropolitan Education Directorate’s Public Relations Officer, told the Ghana News Agency that 25 centres were being used for the one-week examination, which started on Monday, with English Language and Religious and Moral Education (RME).
Mr Ayeriga added that, a total of 246 invigilators, 24 assistant supervisors and 25 supervisors were being used for the exams.
Meanwhile, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, and Mrs Veronica Adzato-Ntem, the Tema Metropolitan Director of Education, on Monday, toured some of the exams centres and encouraged candidates not to panic but rather study and write the exams whiles adhering to all rules and regulations.
They visited the three centres at the Tema Senior High School, and five centres at the Sakumono School Complex Primary and JHS.
The examinations started at about 0930 hours due to problems with arrangements for Police Personnel to escort the examination materials to the various centres.
Mr Odamtten ordered the Education Directorate to change the primary school desks being used by some of the candidates as they were uncomfortable for their size.
He expressed his unhappiness about the chairs and urged the authorities to ensure that comfortable desks were provided before the second day of the exams.
He noted that, he was impressed with the general comportment of the candidates and the readiness of the supervisors and invigilators.
