Voters in the Ejisu constituency will today, April 30, 2024 elect a new MP
Voters in the Ejisu constituency will vote today, April 30, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of John Kumah, who was elected in 2020 on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket.
Kumah, a deputy finance minister, was also elected the NPP candidate for the December 2024 elections.
The main opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), did not field a candidate because the party wants to focus its energies on the 2024 general elections.
GhanaWeb looks at major numbers involved in the organization of the election, which the NPP is expected to win because the vote is in its stronghold of the Ashanti Region.
Six aspirants
Weeks ago, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced that six aspirants were in the race: three party-backed candidates and three independent candidates.
The list in order of their appearance on the ballot paper is as follows:
1. Esther Osei (CPP)
2. Kwabena Boateng (NPP)
3. Beatrice Boakye (LPG)
4. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi (Independent)
5. Gabriel Agyemang Joseph (Independent)
6. Attakorah Joseph (Independent)
92,564 voters on voters register
Over 92,000 votes are up for grabs, according to the 2020 voter population record of the EC.
In the 2020 elections, John Ampontuah Kumah (NPP) polled 68,326 votes out of the total votes cast (representing 82.83%), while his closest contender, George Kwame Huze (NDC), got 14,164 votes (17.17%).
Over 7,000 policemen to be deployed
According to Starr FM, over 7,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure security during the election.
The Inspector-General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, is on record to have assured that the same serenity recorded in the Assin North and Kumawu by-elections will be experienced.
As is usually the case, voting starts at 8 am and is expected to close at 5 pm, following which counting and collation of ballots and subsequent declaration of winner are expected.
