63rd Independence Day celebration: No NPP flags were flown in Kumasi – Lord Commey

Chairman of the Independence Day planning committee, Mr. Lord Oblittey Commey has condemned allegations by a section of the public suggesting that all Independence Day celebrations under the Akufo-Addo administration have been fully hyped political platform.

He disagreed with the assertion that the national event has over the years served as a campaign platform and an avenue to bring members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) together to spill state resources.

“Not a single party flag was flying on any pole anywhere in Kumasi. All through the principal streets, every single pole was carrying a Ghana flag, not an NPP flag. Over 100,000 flags were distributed among individuals. There was nothing partisan about it. If we wanted to politicize it, we would have done so,”

He added that, as Chairman of the Independence Day planning committee, he ensured that everyone played their part in ensuring a unified event.

“For us as planning committee, we did what we could and presented to Ghanaians a unified celebration that put the country flag up there. All partisan interests were reserved to the background,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini is claiming that the NPP government spent money celebrating a day that brought absolutely no gain to the general public.

Governance expert Dr. Eric Oduro Osae, is also of the view that the independence of the Ghana sixty-three years down the line has been more of political than economic.

In this regard, he is calling for the passage of a Legislative Instrument (LI) to back the rotation of the Independence Day Parade, as it has an economic impact on the country.
