Ghanaian author Barima Piesie Okyere-Darko has claimed that Ghana’s Independence Day, March 6, was suggested by the late Joseph Boakye Danquah (JB Danquah), one of the founders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

Speaking in a recent interview on Channel One TV, Okyere-Darko, the author of Echoes from the Doyen, JB Danquah to Ghana and Africa, said that JB Danquah suggested the day because it was the day the Bond of 1944 was signed.

He said that it is recorded in the books of the then Parliament that it was JB Danquah who suggested the day, and not Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“6th March is a legacy of JB Danquah. First of all, he (JB Danquah) said that in 1944, and then during the motion of Kwame Nkrumah’s independence motion, it was JB who suggested that Ghana should be independent on 6th March 1954.

“Nkrumah objected to it, but the British accepted it…. I'm talking about the day of independence. It is in the Hansard of the Legislative Assembly, the British also recorded it, I've done my research,” he said.

The writer also asserted that the name Ghana was suggested by JB Danquah and not Kwame Nkrumah.

He added that the colours of the flag of Ghana were also suggested by JB Danquah and the other members of the UGCC.
