7 dead in rescue mission crash

A Ghana air force helicopter crashed today near the town of Nkawkaw, about 130km north-west of Accra, killing all seven people on board, a defence official said today.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the helicopter was returning from the town of Boma, about 160km from the capital, when it crashed.
"The helicopter had been sent to pick up two victims of a road accident in Boma to bring them to Accra for treatment as they were in critical condition and needed specialised medical care," he said.
The official said the helicopter went down near Nkawkaw, killing four crew members, two patients and a nurse.
He did not specify the reason for the crash but said the pilot had "lost contact with the Accra control tower in the afternoon".

Missing Aircraft Found

The military helicopter that went missing on Saturday has been found in a village called Sekyimase, near Kyebi in the Eastern Region, after almost three days of intense search. According to reports, all seven people on board are dead. The bodies are being conveyed to the 37 military hospital mortuary.

Sekyimase, is several kilometres into the forest from the Accra- Kumasi main road, and is located within the Atiwa forest. About four hundred personnel drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force, Police, Ghana National Fire Service and Forestry Commission have since Saturday, been exploring Nkawkaw and its surrounding areas to locate the Ghana Air Force helicopter.
