The Northern Regional Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has organized a disinfection exercise for 70 water distribution tankers to enable the operators to supply clean potable water to their consumers.

Mr Adam Yakubu Regional Water Quality Manager explained to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that a chemical called Calcium Hypochloride which is a World Health Organisation standard for the exercise was being used for the disinfection.

He said tanker operators would be issued with certificates after the excise and regular sampling of compliance would be conducted to weed out operators who fail to take part in the disinfection exercise.

Mr Yakubu urged residents to demand compliance certificates from tanker operators before buying water from them.

Mr George Lansah, a tanker operator, told the GNA that transporting water was delicate hence the need to regularly disinfect tanks from germs.

Mr Nicholas Nii-Abbey, the Regional Communication Officer of GWCL, said the exercise, the first in the region, would be conducted every three months to ensure safe delivery of potable water.
