700 food vendors screened

Daboase(WR), Oct. 15, GNA - Five hundred out of 700 food vendors screened in Mpohor Wassa East District were certified to be eligible to operate. One hundred and twenty of them had worm infestation while 80 had from typhoid and other diseases and have been put on medication by health personnel.

This was disclosed by Mr Samuel A. Darkwah, Mpohor Wassa East District Environmental Health Officer in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA)at Daboase Mr Darkwah said strayed animals were arrested and their owners fined and appealed to residents whose surroundings were overgrown with weeds to clear them. He said the assembly was negotiating with the prosecution unit of Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA), to assist in the prosecution of environmental and other offenders at Sekondi. Mr Darkwah said so far four people had been prosecuted under the new arrangement. He said indiscriminate disposal of garbage and human waste along streets and in drains in the town were major challenges facing the assembly.

Mr Darkwah noted that although series of forums had been organised to educate the public on effects of environmental degradation, most people continued to flout the assembly's byelaws.
