75 year-old farmer granted 15,000 bail

A Tarkwa circuit court has granted a 75 year-old farmer, GH¢15,000.00 bail with two sureties, for allegedly inflicting multiple cutlass wounds on Yaw Atta, a 62 year-old farmer.

Kofi Mensah, who is popularly known as Abgangba pleaded guilty with explanation to causing harm and using offensive weapon.

He told the court that it was rather the victim (Yaw Atta) who attacked him with a cutlass but he got hold of it and inflicted wounds on him.

The court entered a plea of not guilty for the accused person upon listening to his explanation.

Presenting the facts of the case earlier, Chief Inspector Edward Paddy said the victim and the accused live at Mile four, a suburb of Wassa Damang.

He said on November 4, around 1100 hours, Mensah was arrested by the Wassa Damang police for causing harm to the victim.

Chief Inspector Paddy said police at Wassa-Damang, interrogated the accused person at the District Police Headquarters, and he admitted the offence and claimed that without any provocation the victim came to his residence and insulted him.

Mensah said he became unhappy and followed Atta to his house and inflicted cutlass wounds on his body.

The victim is currently on admission at the Tarkwa Government Hospital receiving treatment.

The Prosecutor said Atta in his cautioned statement noted that on that fateful day he was lying on a wooden bench in front of his house, when Mensah appeared and started shouting that he will slash him with a cutlass.

The case has been adjourned to December 3, 2015 for continuation.
