Former Minister of Road and Highways in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Inusah Fuseini revealed that 80% of fatalities on the road is as a result of stationary vehicles.

He agrees with suggestions that something must be done about the situation but however disagrees that someone should single-handedly be made rich through a towing contract.

“I was at the Ministry of Roads and Highways and I tell you about 80% of people die every year resulting from stationary vehicles”, he stated.

“We need to protect lives and property in this country. …we need to hold vehicle owners responsible but we don’t need to make somebody richer by our default”, Hon. Inusah Fusieni pointed out

“Competition is always good and it inures to the benefit of the consumer. …the vehicle owners are complaining because there is no competition”.

The former Minister also questioned the basis on which some actors are pushing government to implement the controversial mandatory towing levy to be implemented by Road Safety Management Limited (RSML).

“What is the scientific basis of arriving at those fees on vehicles on our roads”, the Tamale Central Member of Parliament (MP) asked alleging it was done discretionary.

“Has the government done vehicle account? Have they done counted all broken down vehicles in this country? And which roads are really affected by break downs? How many vehicles breakdown every year”, the former sector minister quizzed.

He however observed that it is a good law but the implementation must be perused by government.
