Accra, May 8, GNA - A 46 year old unemployed man, Charles Whang has been arrested and placed in Police custody for murdering his wife, Madam Margaret Otu, 51, at their residence at the Ashaleybotwe-Third Gate in Madina, near Accra.

Both persons hail from Korlegonno in the Accra Metropolis. The Madina District Commander of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kwabena Antwi-Boasiako told GNA that two ladies, who were neighbours of the deceased, rushed to the Madina Police Station on Sunday, May 7, 2006 and reported that they heard Whang beating the wife deep in the night of Saturday, May 6, 2006.

He said when the women went there to separate them, Whang sacked them and threatened to stab anyone, who ventured with a bottle and they quietly left the scene.

The following Sunday, May 7, 2006 at 9000 hours they discovered that the door to Madam Otu's room was locked so they tore the mosquito netting on one of the windows and opened it to peep through and found her lying on the floor.

When they called her she did not respond and they suspected her to be dead so they went to lodge a complaint at the Madina Police Station. DSP Antwi-Boasiako said at about 1300 hours the Police went to scene and found Whang with some family members and arrested them. During Police interrogation, it came out that when Whang found that the wife was dead he quickly rushed to the family house at Korlegonno to inform them that his wife was vomiting blood and, therefore, he should be given some family members to help him to send the wife to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

When the relatives got to the house and discovered that Madam Otu was dead they asked Whang to report to the Madina Police but he refused. DSP Antwi-Boasiako said the family of the deceased were in the midst of discussions when the Police suddenly appeared and arrested them.

He said blood was oozing from the ears of the deceased. The Police have since deposited the body at the Korle-Bu Teaching morgue for autopsy while investigations continued.
