A-G Report On Wereko-Brobbey Laid Before Parliament

Fri, 13 Feb 2004 Source: .

A Special Report of the Auditor-General on Investigation into alleged irregularities against Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, former Chief Executive of the VRA, was laid before Parliament on Friday.

However, there was division between the NPP Majority and the NDC Minority Members of the House over whether the report should be referred to the Public Accounts Committee only or a joint committee of the Public Accounts and the Committee on Energy. The Majority side of the House favoured the idea of referring the matter to a joint committee of the Public Accounts and the Energy Committee.

According to the Majority Members such decision would enable the expertise of the Energy Committee to be brought to bear on the quality of discussion on the issue. The NDC Minority Members on the other hand said the matter should be referred to the Public Accounts Committee only since it has to do with a report compiled by the Auditor-General. The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Peter Ala Adjetey ruled that the matter be referred to a joint committee of the Public Accounts and the committee on Energy.

This is because, the alleged irregularities on which the Auditor-General conducted his investigation, could not be said to be limited to financial matters only.
