AAG alleges 'selective' billboard demolitions, appeals to Mahama for intervention

The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has raised red flags over the ongoing billboard demolition exercise in the Greater Accra Region, urging government to step in and ensure fairness and transparency.

In a statement issued on Friday, February 13, 2026, the Association said while it fully supports efforts to sanitise the outdoor advertising space, improve public safety, and enhance the appearance of Ghana’s cities, it is deeply troubled by how the current demolitions are being carried out.

According to the AAG, there was little to no direct engagement with key industry players before the exercise began; particularly with operators who are at the heart of outdoor advertising.

The Association also criticised the lack of a clearly communicated framework outlining timelines, compliance guidelines, phased implementation plans, and enforcement standards.

The group further pointed to what it described as irregularities and selective enforcement, raising concerns that certain actions may be influenced by political considerations or individuals with vested interests in segments of the advertising industry.

Such developments, the AAG warned, risk destabilising the sector, shaking investor confidence, and threatening the livelihoods of thousands of Ghanaians employed in the outdoor advertising value chain.

Calling for what it termed an “institutional reset,” the Association appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to intervene.

It urged the government to ensure transparent consultations with industry stakeholders, clearly define the mandate of the demolition committee, and adopt a structured, fair and phased approach that respects due process and regulatory integrity.

The AAG emphasised that proper governance and coordinated implementation are essential if the goals of public safety and improved urban aesthetics are to be achieved without undermining economic activity.

“There is a need for Institutional Reset and Proper Governance,” the statement said, adding that the President and the minister must call the relevant authorities to order to restore confidence and stability in the industry.
