AGI rallies to the side of Kinapharma

Accra, Dec. 16, GNA - The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) on Wednesday rallied to the side of pharmaceutical giant, Kinapharma, in a failed police suspicion of drugs on the compound of the company and called upon Government to institute an enquiry into the Police handling of the matter.

The AGI said in a statement in Accra that many of its members were concerned about "such arbitrariness in imputing serious criminal conduct to businesses without basis".

The AGI said it would want the enquiry to cover the way and manner in which the Police action was conducted and leaked to the media before any evidence had been gathered.

"This is particularly required in view of the fact that the company is a leading manufacturer and exporter of pharmaceuticals which has built a credible brand over the years.

"Such a brand is of benefit not only to the company but to the country as a whole. Any action which has the potential to destroy the brand should require adequate minimum evidence."

The AGI said it recognised the duty of the Police to perform their statutory functions without regard to the standing of any person. It said the Association had been supportive of the Police in various ways including donations of equipment and logistics in their fight against crime.

"This notwithstanding, having considered all the information available in the public domain, and having met with the Management of Kinapharma Ltd, and having also read the contents of the press conference held by the Police, the Association of Ghana Industries calls upon Government to institute an enquiry into the Police handling of the matter," AGI said. 16 Dec. 09
