The Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, Ghana's first Advanced Information Technology Institute (AITI) will launch "Drive IT" a free IT training for Taxi Drivers @ 1:00pm on Tuesday 13th September 2005. This programme intends to train about 100 drivers from selected branches in basic computer skills such as e-mailing and web search.

AITI works to achieve the status of an ICT Centre of Excellence in the ECOWAS sub-region by providing globally benchmarked market-oriented training of ICT Professionals, developing and applying research and innovative technologies for socio-economic development for West Africa.

Service/taxi drivers, normally the first point of interaction with the public and visitors to the country, need to be abreast with trends in the global world. It is in this regard that AITI has designed this special programme to facilitate their participation in the growing technology world. The programme is being piloted with a number of identifiable taxi ranks in Accra. This training is expected to demystify ICT for the target group, equip them with basic computer skills, offer alternative means of communication and provide them access to the driving global library.

According to Eric Kwaofio, Chairman of the Rawlings Park-Osu/Labadi branch, he has always wanted his union to have a training of this kind. He therefore suggested that the duration of the programme should be extended.

AITI trusts that this event will go a long way to promote the growth of ICT among this segment of our population and sensitize Ghanaian business persons to the potential for ICT as a modern and efficient tool for improving their productivity and growing their businesses. End.
