AMA Chief Executive Visits Flooded Areas

Accra, - The people of Kopevi, which is between Akweteman and Achimota, were today assured that the three bridges spanning the Ngou-bu stream in the area destroyed following heavy rains yesterday, The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Nat Nuno Amarteifio, said the City Engineers Department will be instructed to assess the extent of damage and cost of reconstruct Two persons were drowned when the bridge collapsed during the downpour. The body of one of them has been recovered and buried while the other is yet to be found. A third person was rescued, Mr Joseph Lamptey, Assemblyman for the Akweteman electoral area told reporters during a tour of the sites of the bridges. Mr Lamptey appealed for good roads and a drainage system for the area which he described as one of the deprived of the city. As a result of the havoc caused, children cannot cross the stream to attend schools at Achimota, he said. Meanwhile, the residents have constructed a make-shift wooden bridge for temporary use.

Two Persons Drown In Ashaiman Floods Ashaiman (G/A), - An employee of the Ghana textiles manufacturing company (GTMC) drowned with an unidentified woman when they were crossing the Gbemi stream in Ashaiman last night. Mr Daniel L. Odai, district police commander, who confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency in Ashaiman today, gave the name of the GTMC employee as Mr John Peasah, of the printing section. The woman aged about 30, is of an Ewe extraction. He said the stream overflowed its banks into the streets as a result of the rains, displacing people whose houses are near it. ''After 21 hours of rain, we had to stop people from crossing the roads especially in the night to save them from drowning.'' DSP Odai said while the police had mounted the exercise at the northern part of the stream, some people found their way to the southern section where the two people were drowned. Their bodies were retrieved early this morning and have been deposited at the Tema General hospital mortuary for post-mortem, he added. DSP Odai said the police, the navy and other voluntary groups have since constructed a 'safe-crossing bridge' over the stream with ropes to enable workers and traders. In another development, the road to Kpone has been destroyed as result of the torrential rains yesterday and the town has been cut away from Tema. According to Ms Beatrice Naa Afieye Ashong, Member of Parliament for Kpone Katamanso, the foundation of the additional culvert that was built recently to support the old bridge, in anticipatio She said many vehicles loaded with foodstuffs, fish and other goods cannot cross and the drivers and some passengers had to pass the night in their vehicles. Ms Ashong appealed to the contractor to make the bridge passable as quickly as possible.

Nrontihene Of Nkoranza Fined For Assault Nkoranza, (B/A), - The Nkoranza district tribunal has imposed a fine of 450,000 cedis on the Krontihene of Nkoranza, Nana Kwesi Kwei, for causing bodily harm to a 40-year-old farmer, Mr Kwame T The tribunal also ordered him to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for six months or in default pay a fine of 200,000 cedis. The chief who was convicted on his own plea will go to jail for 18 months in default. The tribunal ordered that 400.000 cedis out of the fine if paid be given as compensation to Mr Tewiah. The prosecution told the tribunal chaired by Supi Ehuren that sometime in May last year the accused attacked Mr Tewiah on a farm at Tom, near Nkoranza, over disputed palm trees and caused harm t Mr Tewiah said he purchased the palm trees from another farmer whose land Nana Kwei claims ownership.

Amanfrom Citizens Asked To Help Out In Electrification Project Amanfrom (Ash), -- Nana Otwere Yaw Bediako the second, chief of Amanfrom, near Kumasi, has called on citizens of the town to pay their levies for the completion of the town's electrification He made the appeal at a meeting at Amanfrom with the unit committee and the youth. Resident citizens are paying 5,000 cedis a man and 2,000 cedis a woman for the project, while non-resident men are contributing 10,000 cedis, and the women, 5,000 cedis. Nana Bediako expressed concern about the non payment of the levies which is delaying the project. Mallam Sakaria Hassan, chief Imam of the town commended Nana Yaw Bediako for providing 20 electricity poles worth about three million cedis to support the project. Mallam Hassan appealed to the non-residents to come home regularly to contribute either in cash or in kind to the development of the town.

20 Person Nabbed In British Visa Deal Accra, - Twenty persons who attempted to obtain British visas with fake documents have been arrested by the police, a statement from the Police Headquarters in Accra said yesterday. The arrests, the police said, followed complaints from the British High Commission that a large number of visa applicants use fake bank statements and letters from some organisations. The police said investigations have shown that such people are unaware of the existence of a mechanism for checking on the authenticity of documents presented to the commission and other diplo The statement therefore warned prospective travellers to be wary of visa contractors who offer to assist them to obtain visas by providing them documents to support their applications.

Nkoranza Gets Rehab Centre Nkoranza, --A rehabilitation home and school for the disabled, the mentally-retarded and street children has been established at Nkoranzza in the Brong-Ahafo region. The home, known as Peace for Christ Community (PCC) social centre is located at the premises of Nkoranza Saint Theresa's Catholic hospital. The founder of the home, Dr. Inneke Bossman, yesterday conducted officials from the district education directorate round to inspect structures and other facilities at the school. Dr Bossman who is the mental health co-ordinator in Brong Ahafo said the home is being financed by her friends from Holland and the United States as well as those in Ghana. She mentioned the Dutch Embassy in Accra and a non-governmental organisation in Holland-Wilde Ganzen - as other sponsors of the home.
