The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A.) and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have issued directives they hope should minimize the intensity of floods and also for rapid and effective flood response ahead of the rains.

A statement issued by the AMA Friday, said the directives have been issued in anticipation of the rainy season, usually attended by flooding around the metropolis.

“The A.M.A. has identified all the flood prone areas in the metropolis and alerted all communities in those areas. Safe havens which could serve as temporary shelter for victims of flood have also been identified and made known to the vulnerable communities”, the statement said.

The statement issued by the Assembly’s Head of Public Affairs, Numo Blafo III, urged the public especially victims of floods and related developments to seek shelter in the identified locations.

“The A.M.A. is urging the general public to support the assembly’s effort to provide a clean environment for all by desilting choked minor drains within their communities before the onset of the rains to mitigate and prevent flooding.”

Adabraka not expected to flood

Asked why Adabraka in central Accra, which in the recent past suffered grave consequences as a result of floods, was excluded from the list of flood prone areas, Numo Blafo III told Graphic Online that a lot of work has gone into desilting drains and the main Odaw river which run through the area and was therefore not expected to be flooded as had been the case in the past.
