AMA confirms Vanderpuije as Accra City Mayor

Accra, May 7, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly on Thursday confirmed the nomination of Dr Alfred Vanderpuije, a former tutor, as Mayor of the capital city by an overwhelming majority. Dr Vanderpuje polled 86 votes of the 88 ballots cast.

Members also elected Mr Desmond Addo-Binney, an accountant, as Presiding Member of the Assembly after a second round of voting. The first ballot for the position of a Presiding Member did not produce an outright winner as neither of the two contestants - Mr Addo-Biney and his opponent, Mr Ayaa Kojo Armah - secured the required two-thirds votes.

Ahead of the second round, Mr Armah stepped down and Mr Addo-Binney won 73 of the total 88 ballots.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Vanderpuije said he would work to address poor sanitation, waste management, illegal construction and street hawking in the city.

Mr. Addo-Binney thanked the Assembly for electing him and called on members to support him to deliver.

Mr. Nii Armah Ashietey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, urged all the members to work in unity for the betterment of Accra. He urged the two leaders to be humble, selfless and God-fearing, adding that they should uphold good governance and ensure accelerated development in the city.

Mr. Ashietey appealed to members of the Assembly to monitor the use of resources, while helping in revenue mobilization and proper planning of their communities.
