Accra, Sept. 18, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Thursday demolished 35 unauthorised structures near the Graphic Road in Accra.

Nana Tawiah, Acting Chief Metro Guard, told the Ghana News Agency that the kiosks and other structures, which were built on a waterway, served as residence for some families.

He said notices were served on them on August 18 last year and on September 17 to quit but they refused to do so. Nana Tawiah said the demolishing exercise, which has so far affected about 132 structures started at the Ministries, James Fort Beach and North Dzorwulu.

He said there would be a monitoring exercise to ensure that the structures did not spring up again.

The residents, who were visibly angry, told the Ghana News Agency they did not have anywhere to go to.

Mr Kwame Bright Amuzu, a Resident, pleaded with the government to help them get a place where they could settle with their families. Mr Parker Allotey, Public Relation Officer of the AMA, said plans were far advanced to construct gutters and to develop the area, hence the need to clear the place. 18 Sept. 2003
