Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Numo Blafo III, says the Assembly has decided to redevelop some markets to afford traders a conducive environment for business.

Nimo Blafo said this on Eezy FM in Accra on Wednesday where he revealed that the 31stDecember Market, Kwaseadwaso, London, Mallam-Atta and Salaga Markets are set to undergo major reconstruction works by the beginning of the second quarter of the year.

Numo Blafo III further revealed that the assembly hopes to curb the worrying phenomenon were pedestrian walkways of the major highways and roads in the national capital have been taken over by hawkers and traders.

According to him, about 70 per cent of the assembly’s internally generated fund is used for waste collection amidst other pressing demands that confronts it.

He bemoaned the indiscipline eschewed by the traders who always find an excuse to return to the pavements amidst efforts by successive administrations to relocate them to well-constructed market sheds within the city.

He also cited the instance of traders abandoning the Pedestrian Shopping Mall built by the former Mayor, Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson for the pavements at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

Numo Blafo III continued that the AMA has re-introduced a bye-law that charges drivers for allowing their passengers do business with hawkers when vehicles are in motion.

He was hopeful that this exercise will provide suitable selling and hawking areas for traders.
