Larteh Akuapem, Aug. 27, GNA - An abattoir at Larteh Akuapem that had been abandoned for the past five years is now being used as a brothel.

This came out when Mr Opare Addo, Akuapem North District Chief Executive, in the company of Mr Ansah Appiah, Finance and Administrative sub-committee chairman, Mr Ernest Adjei Quaye, District Engineer and Mr Mansford Obeng, an assembly member inspected some markets and stalls at Larteh and Akropong on Thursday. Mr Obeng told the DCE that one Samuel Akrofi hired the abattoir from the assembly at a monthly rent of GHC 2 but had turned the place into a brothel and young men and women patronize it heavily, especially at night.

Mr Addo expressed worry about the situation particularly at the time of HIV/AIDS pandemic and said the assembly would go into the matter and the culprit brought to book.

During the inspection Mr Addo found that most stall owners had sublet theirs to other traders and charging exorbitant rents and said the assembly would terminate their contract and those who want theirs back would be asked to re-apply. Mr Addo presented bicycles, Wellington boots and raincoats to revenue collectors at a ceremony at Akropong. He expressed worry about low revenue generation by revenue collectors and urged them to work extra hard. He told them that effectiveness of the assembly would depend to a large extent on their output and advised them to change their attitude to work.

Mr Addo said a special task force had been formed to monitor the activities of revenue collectors and advised those of them who were conniving with traders to cheat the assembly to change for the better before the long arm of the law catches up with them. Mrs Comfort Mullings, Principal Revenue Superintendent, thanked the DCE and said the presentation of the items would enable them to work harder.

She advised her colleagues not to use their low remuneration as an excuse to indulge in activities that could undermine the assembly's revenue.
