Ablekuma Central MP promotes education through sports

Mr. Theophilus Tetteh-Chaie, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, has advised students in the constituency to let discipline be their hallmark as they grow to become responsible adults.

He said without discipline, all the investment in providing educational infrastructures such as school blocks, libraries, computers, textbooks among other things would be a waste of resources.

Mr. Tetteh-Chaie gave the advice at a two-day private inter-schools sports festival, first of its kind in the constituency at the Lartebiokorshie Presbyterian Vocational Institute organised by Virgo Consult, an NGO.

“If the students of this constituency will assure me of being disciplined and reciprocate my gesture by studying hard to pass their examination, that will motivate me to do more for them to become responsible people but not a liability on society,” he stressed.

Mr. Tetteh-Chaie, who sponsored the events of soccer, volleyball and table tennis in the boys and girls categories, said the private schools in the country have helped a lot in absorbing students who could not gaine admission to public schools and needed to be supported.

The MP, who is also a member of the Education Committee in Parliament, said sports was one way of encouraging education and to foster good relationship among the school children and gave the assurance that the programme was not going to be a nine-day wonder but it would be an annual affair.

Mr. Gayhard Dogbe, the Principal of the Presbyterian Vocational Institute, commended the MP for supporting education in the constituency and for sponsoring the games, and called on the students to use the games as a peace building tool among themselves and the nation as whole.

He congratulated the participating schools for responding promptly to the invitations.

Mr. Justice Dapaah, Headmaster of the KAS Senior High School, said the private schools are contributing immensely to the socio-economic development of the country, but their major problem had been the registration of students to participate in May/June examinations.

He said in the last year’s examination, the private schools presented 100 candidates but only 41 students were approved and therefore appealed to the MP to do something about the situation in Parliament.

Participating schools in the games were; New Generation Senior High, Conquerors Academy of Business Studies, KAS Senior High, Dansis Senior High, Presbyterian Vocational Institute, NATECO, Ashileys Business College and Emit Electronics Institute.

The MP donated sets of jerseys, footballs, certificate and cash to all the participating schools and in the final soccer match, KAS Senior High School beat Conquerors Academy of Business Studies 1-0 to lift the silver cup, whiles in the Volleyball for boys and girls, NATECO came first to grab the cup and similarly in the table-tennis, Emit boys and girls emerged winners.**
