Abolish 31st December and June 4th commemoration – Lawyer Boafo

A private legal practitioner Lawyer Yaw Boafo is making a strong case for all events marked by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to mark coups d’etat and military revolts to be scrapped.

The former Ashanti Region President of the Bar Association contends the annual 31st December revolution commemorations and events held by the opposition NDC and its assigns to mark the June 4th uprising must be discontinued.

Justifying his assertions on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, the legal luminary indicated that such events open wounds reminding several families of events that led to the molestation and killing of loved ones who fell victim to the excesses.

His comments come on the back of critics of Sunday’s non-denominational thanksgiving service held to mark the Silver Jubilee of Ghana’s republican status.

Lawyer Boafo told host Lantam Papanko, “Somebody in this country actually feels that every year he has to celebrate 31st December and these are people who truncated civilian rule and people met in Ho to remind us of what happened on December 31st 1981.”

“And on coming June 4th, they will be reminding us of the carnage and these same people will turn round to tell us that we should not celebrate peace and bloodshed should be celebrated.”

“I saw 1979 and I saw 1981 and it is something that we should pray should never never happen again in this country. The NDC as a political party owes us as a nation to stop reminding people of their past pains,’ he said.

Lawyer Boafo recounted a myriad of incidents of people who were stripped off their wealth, lashed in public and killed by soldiers who led such revolts.

He contended that the opposition NDC had no moral right to continue holding itself as the standard for measuring the democracy in Ghana.
