Nana Ofori Owusu, Chairman of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), has questioned the logic behind students at the basic education level writing the BECE.

According to Nana Ofori Owusu, the compulsory demand for students to write the BECE contributes to streetism.

To him, the BECE is unnecessary and should be scrapped.

"We have to be very serious with our education. The way our education system is going, it is not doing us any good. It creates streetism," he said during the "Kokrokoo" panel discussion show on Peace FM.

He emphasized, "You must abolish it. It is of no value."

Nana Ofori Owusu made these comments in relation to the uncertainty surrounding this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The government owes the examining body, WAEC, over 90 million cedis and, reportedly, if it fails to pay 50 percent of the debt, the examination may be in jeopardy.

WAEC, according to reports, has received only GH₵2.3 million out of GH₵95.83 million, which, to them, is not enough to organize the exams scheduled to begin on Monday, July 8, to July 15.

However, on Monday, June 24, the Public Relations Officer of WAEC, John Kapi, indicated in an interview on Kokrokoo with Kwami Sefa Kayi that the examination will proceed.

"We have done the preparations... We can indeed do it. The printing and stationery are all ready," John Kapi said.
