Abuakwa Police investigates the death of five family members in river Owabi

The Abuakwa Police have mounted investigations into circumstances that caused a vehicle to plunge into river Owabi resulting in the tragic death of five family members at Akropong, in the Atwima Nwabigya North District, on Tuesday morning.

The vehicle, which was being driven by Mrs Helena Yason, with her two children, and two other passengers on board, was said to have veered off the road and plunged into the Owabi River, which crosses the Akropong and Dabaah road.

She was transporting the children to school and picked up the two other passengers, who were going in the same direction.

The other victims were Rita Agyare 41, a seamstress, Eric Boamah Gyasi, 28, a plumber, Lordina Yason, 10 and Doreen Yason five, both daughters of Helena.

The bodies of the victims, except Doreen, have been retrieved from the river and deposited at a morgue.

Kofi Nti, assemblyman for Akropong electoral area, told the Ghana News Agency that, Helena, a Career Technology teacher, was transporting her daughters to school, as she always did every morning. On her way, she picked up Rita and Agyare, who were known to her and were also travelling in the same direction.

Upon reaching the valley between Akropong and Dabaah, the vehicle, a Toyota Vibe with, registration number AS7403-21, suddenly veered off the road and plunged into the river.

Nti said personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) from Nkawie were called and they joined community members to retrieve the bodies of the victims.

They were rushed to the Tabere Mount Sinai Hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

She said the body of the five-year-old Doreen was yet to be retrieved.

A report had been made to the Abuakwa police, who are conducting investigations.
