Abura Assembly gives support to the physically challenged

Abura-Dunkwa (C/R) Jan 7, GNA- The Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) district Assembly on Friday presented items worth 80 million cedis to 35 physically challenged people in the district to enable them earn a living.

The items include electric sewing machines, knitting machines and equipment for operating commercial mobile phones as well as wire mesh and roofing sheets.

Presenting the items on behalf of the Assembly, Mr Isaac Edumadze, Central Regional Minister advised the beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes to enable them to be productive in order not to resort to begging as a means of livelihood.

He commended the Assembly for its supports, asked other assemblies to emulate it, assured the beneficiaries that the government would continue to make lives better and enjoyable for all Ghanaians, and urged them to take good care of the items to reap the maximum benefit. Mr Job Acquah Markin, District Chief Executive for AAK said it was government policy that two per cent of the Assembly's Common Fund must be used to assist the physically challenged. It was in this regard that the Assembly bought the items to them to enable them also work and earn a living, stressing that some of the beneficiaries would be given seed capital of between one and three million cedis. Mr John Ankrah, Head of Community Care Programme at the Regional Social Welfare Office said people with disabilities constituted an important minority group in every community and have special needs and therefore needed special services to be able to function as productive members of society.

Miss Phoebe Agyei, the District Social Welfare Officer said her outfit would monitor the beneficiaries to ensure that the desired results of instituting the programme were achieved.
