One person died while six others sustained severe injuries in two separate accidents which occurred at the Dansoman Roundabout in Accra last weekend.

The name of the deceased was given as Trudy Yirenkyi, a four- year-old girl. The injured are Olivia Aidoo, Trudy’s mother, Grace Danfua, Theophilus Kwame, James Hammond, and Edwin Amoah.

The first accident, which involved a Daewoo Racer taxi with registration number GR 1264 H, occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in front of the Capital 02 shop. Barely an hour later, the second accident occurred about 10 metres away.

According to an eyewitness, Madam Lydia Amarteifio, the taxi, with a passenger in the front seat, was seen travelling at top speed from Sakaman towards the Dansoman Roundabout.

On reaching the Capital 02 shop, it veered off the road, climbed the pavement and crashed into a secondhand clothing shop. In the process it knocked down the four-year-old girl and her mother, killing the child instantly.

The mother of the deceased and the second-hand clothing seller, who sustained severe injuries in their legs, were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where they have since been on admission.

According to Madam Amarteifio, the driver of the taxi started behaving strangely after the accident and it was suspected that he had an attack of fit.

She said barely an hour after the first accident, a Benz truck, with registration number, GR 5281J, loaded with sachet water, was spotted from Sakaman driving towards the roundabout.

The driver also lost control and crashed into four vehicles.

The truck veered off the road onto the pavement and knocked down some pedestrians.

Four persons sustained injuries and they were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The Dansoman and Odorkor police confirmed the accidents.

The Dansoman District Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, DSP Thomas Addi, said the two drivers have been arrested and are assisting the police in their investigations.
