Nyankpala (N/R), Aug 3, - The first inter-faculty games of the University for Development Studies (UDS) have begun at Nyankpala with an assurance that government will not rpt not renege on its responsibility of ensuring the development of the university. Mr Gilbert Iddi, Northern regional minister, who was the guest speaker, gave the assurance at the opening of the games attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor R.B. Bening, heads of the faculties, lecturers and heads of government departments. The faculties of Agriculture, Integrated Development Studies and School of Medicine and Health Science are competing in soccer(men), volleball (men/women) and table tennis (men/women). Mr Iddi said the university has a unique role to play in the country's advancement because of its multi-disciplinary nature, adding that the students as pioneers owe it as a responsibility to assist in nurturing and upholding the ideals and culture of the school. He said the UDS needs the support of everybody, especially politicians, to enable it to play its expected role of enhancing development. Mr Issahaku Mustapha, senior sports coach of the university, appealed for support from the public for sports equipment such as trophies, jerseys, training boots and footballs. Prof. Bening called for private participation and support in the running of the university's sports programme. In the opening soccer match, the Faculty or Agriculture beat the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies 3-2.
