Accra, Aug. 27, GNA - The Accra City Campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, has reduced the proposed fees for the 2003-2004 academic year that starts on September 5.
Fresh students admitted to pursue degree courses in Administration and the Humanities would be paying four million cedis and three million cedis, instead of the previously announced fees of eight million cedis and six million cedis, respectively.
Admission letters to the level 200 students signed by Professor J.F. Wiredu, the Acting Principal, asked successful applicants to lodge a non-refundable deposit of one million cedis to Account Number 2000011 at the Tudu Branch of Ghana Commercial Bank in Accra.
The increase of fees attracted a lot of concern from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and other stakeholders.
Professor Edward Ofori-Sarpong, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, however, described the increase as realistic to ensure quality education.
The immediate needs of the new university, he said, included a computer laboratory, an upgraded library and offices at the cost of 300 million cedis.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor in making a case for the new fees said it cost government about 40,000 dollars to educate one student in the United States by scholarship.
Protesting students argued that there had been no official publication from the University on the proposed fees and no statement to that effect in the University's own schedule of fees published recently. Students admitted to the External Degree Centre in the recent past years paid subsidised fees of less than one million cedis. 27 Aug. 03
