As part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations, members of the Rotaract Club of Accra-East joined hands with the staff and pupils of the La Anglican 2 Primary and Junior High School located in the La Dade Kotopon Municipal District, Greater Accra Region to educate pupils on the importance of proper hygiene and hand washing.

The project themed “War On Germs” is a water, sanitation and hygiene project which seeks to increase awareness and deepen the understanding of proper hygiene and highlight the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases thereby save lives. This project is undertaken on the 15th of October each year to celebrate Global Handwashing Day.

A team led by Emmanuel Deho, a Past President of the Club, and Delali Matewuawe, Project Director; demonstrated to the pupils effective way of handwashing with soap and explained the benefits associated with it.

Elisha Tubo-Oreriba, President of the Club, donated buckets, soaps, towels and educational materials on behalf of the Club to the school.

He encouraged the students to protect their health by strictly adhering to the taught hand washing standards.

In response, the Head Teacher of the School, Mrs. Olivia Tetteh, commended the Club for dedicating resources towards the project stressing on the need for the students to make good use of the donated items.

In the spirit which they had been taught, the students took to the streets to educate members of the community on the need to observe proper hand washing techniques, displaying placards with inscriptions such as “Hand washing habits, once acquired; stays with the person forever.”

Currently in its third year, the War On Germs Campaign has received support from Global Communities, an international non-profit organization and has benefitted over 2,500 pupils in five different public schools in the Greater- Accra region.
