Michael Kpakpo Allotey is Accra Mayor
Following a tragic accident near the COCOBOD office in Accra’s Central Business District, Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has banned all trading activities on the road median in the area.
The decision comes after an Aayalolo bus reportedly suffered brake failure, veered off course, and crashed into traders, killing one person and injuring several others on Monday, September 1, 2025.
During a visit to the scene, Mayor Allotey expressed deep concern about the safety risks posed by roadside trading.
Fatal accident rocks Accra's central business district
He blamed the incident on the gradual encroachment of traders from the pavements onto the road itself.
The Mayor noted that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would strictly enforce city by-laws to prevent further tragedies and help decongest the business district.
“From tomorrow morning, no one should return here to sell,” he declared.
He added, “Every time I ask you to leave, you say you’re single mothers. Now, one of you is gone.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the bus lost control before plowing into the crowd, underscoring the urgent need for stricter enforcement and safer trading zones.
