Accra, April 23, GNA -Nii Stanley Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Friday pledged to ensure the Metropolis achieves the best in sanitation.
"I will not look at the pigment of a person's political colour in the discharge of my duties", he said.
Nii Adjiri Blankson made the pledge at a meeting with Importers, Manufacturers and Distributors of plastic and polythene products on measures to handle their waste products.
The meeting, attended by stakeholders in the plastic and polythene industry, also discussed ways to deal with the menace of the disposal of plastic and polythene waste in the metropolis.
The Accra Mayor said the problem of disposal of plastic and polythene waste had outstretched the resources of the Assembly, therefore, making it difficult to clean-up the Metropolis.
He said it was estimated to cost the assembly about 300 million cedis every month to clear filth in the metropolis but the Assembly did not have that money.
Nii Adjiri Blankson called on Sachet water producers to make some special contributions to the assembly, as their support to clean the Metropolis.
Mr. Agyapong Ntreh, Managing Director of A-One Sachet Company called for the setting up of a fund to tackle the plastic and polythene waste problem in Ghana.
He said most of the citizenry used plastic and polythene products, either by themselves or by their relatives, therefore, it was imperative to put money aside to tackle this huge problem.
Mr Ntreh, who is also the President of the Sachet Water Producers Association, called on the Assembly to enforce the implementation of its bye-laws on sanitation to make the clean-up exercise successful.
"Unless we are prepared to flex our muscle to make sure the right things are done, we would continue to scratch the surface of the problem", he said.
