Accra Poly Workers call for Principal's Removal

Accra, Sept 30, GNA - Workers of Accra Polytechnic have passed a vote of no confidence in Nana (Dr) Baah Boakye, Principal, and demanded his resignation with effect from October seven.

They also asked him to vacate his bungalow by that date or be declared a persona non-grata "upon which we will advise ourselves bearing in mind all the unavoidable consequences".

A letter addressed to the Minister of Education and copied to the Chairman, Governing Council of the institute and several others including the press, accused Nana Boakye of corruption, arrogance, callousness and gross administrative incompetence.

The letter was signed by the executive bodies of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG), Polytechnic Administration Association of Ghana (PAAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and supported by 99 names and signatures.

In an interview with the GNA, Nana Boakye denied the charges against him and described the workers' demand as "a pretext to cover up their incompetence, corruption and inefficient practices I have set up committees to investigate".

He denied the nine charges levelled against him point by point, saying it was even wrong for his accusers to send the letter containing their demands to the Minister of Education instead of the Governing Council of Accra Polytechnic.

"I hate laziness and inefficient workers and if I sanction a lazy worker and I am accused of vindictiveness, then so be it. "There are some workers who forge medical claims, refuse to register private students after collecting money from them while others mishandle examination results.

"There are some who violate the stores supply regulations and engage in fraudulent purchases". He said a committee he has set up to investigate the malpractices would soon come out with its findings. "This is why I am being paradoxically intimidated," he said, adding "I am prepared for any probe".
