The Accra-Tema Motorway project has reached 53% completion, with work on bridges, interchanges, footbridges and road expansion continuing despite delays affecting the project.

The Project Manager for the Accra Motorway Project, Ing. Ben Sackey, said about 70% of the concrete structures planned under the project had been completed, including key components intended to improve traffic flow along the busy highway.

He explained that work is progressing on several sections of the motorway, with contractors expanding the urban highway, reconstructing old bridges and building facilities to improve road safety and access for commuters.

Speaking with GhanaWeb during a site inspection, Sackey said three existing river-crossing bridges, which had served the motorway for more than 60 years, were being reconstructed to meet the needs of the upgraded road.

“These bridges have been in existence for over 60 years. They are composite bridges made of steel and concrete, and they have to be demolished and reconstructed,” he said.

He disclosed that one of the three bridges had been completed, while work on another was nearing completion.

He added that construction on the third bridge started about a month and a half before the inspection, with launching activities underway.

Sackey also said the project involved expanding both sides of the urban highway to provide three lanes in each direction.

The old bridges along the expressway will be demolished and rehabilitated after traffic has been moved onto the newly constructed bridges.

On other parts of the project, the project manager said about four kilometres of road base material had been laid, paving the way for asphalt works to begin.

Side drains and footbridges were also under construction, with seven footbridges planned along the motorway.

He added that two of the three interchanges planned for the project had been completed, while the interchange at Alashie remained under construction.

Overall, he said the concrete structures, including bridges, interchanges, footbridges and culverts, were about 70% complete.

Despite the reported progress, the project has reached 53% overall completion amid delays. Sackey’s briefing outlined the status of construction works but did not specify the reasons for the delays or provide a revised completion date.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between Accra, Tema and surrounding communities, while helping to ease congestion and improve the movement of people and goods along the corridor.
