Accused granted 50 million cedis bail for stealing mobile phone

Tema, March 22, GNA - A man has been granted bail in the sum of 50 million cedis with one surety to be justified by the Tema Circuit Court 'B' for stealing a mobile phone. The accused, John Adegu pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing and is to reappear in court on March 29, 2006. According to Police Chief Inspector Daniel Martey, prosecutor for the case, Agnes Larbi, the complainant who is a trader resides at Swedru in the Central Region, while the accused resides at Chorkor in the Greater Accra Region.

Prosecution said the complainant attended her son's marriage engagement ceremony in Tema on February 18, 2006, adding that during the ceremony, she went to talk to her son leaving her Samsung V250 camera mobile phone in her handbag on her chair. The court heard that, the complainant returned and found her mobile phone missing from her bag but accused who was sitting behind her during the function had left. She became suspicious and reported the case to the Police.

At about 0945 hours on March 19, 2006 prosecution told the court that, accused was arrested at the premises of the Christ Apostolic Church in Tema Community 9 and sent to the Community Two police station for interrogation. Chief Inspector Martey further said accused admitted the offence in his caution statement explaining however that, he dropped the phone in a gutter in his attempt to jump over it when he saw he was being followed.
