Action Aid Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization has called on government to address the structural causes of gender-based violence and securing economic justice for women to ensure gender equality.
They made the call in Wa during the launch of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, organized by Action Aid Ghana in collaboration with the Department of Gender in Wa, on the theme: “End gender-based violence in the world of work”.
Mr George Dery, the Upper West Regional Programmes Manager of Action Aid said the 16 days of activism campaign was launched in 1991 and continues to be coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL).
He said the programme was marked on 25th November to 10th December every year as an International Day against Violence against Women and International Human Rights Day within a 16 days period to reinforce the recognition of violence against women as a human rights violation.
According to Mr Dery the theme of the programme was relevant to Action Aid as a federation committed in addressing the structural causes of gender –based violence and securing economic justice for women, including promoting access to decent work and the recognition, reduction and redistribution of their unpaid care and domestic work burden.
He said the theme also reflected in the global campaign on women’s labour, decent work and public services whose first work stream focused on generating support for the ILO Convention with plans for sustained mobilization on its ratification.
“The theme is particularly relevant for us as a federation committed to addressing the structural causes of gender-based violence and securing economic justice for women, including promoting access to decent work and the recognition, reduction and redistribution of their unpaid care and domestic work burden”
“Again, it is also central to our global campaign on women’s labour, decent work and public services whose first work stream focused on generating support for the adoption of ILO Convention with plan for its ratification” he said.
Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional minister in a speech read on his behalf said the government was working in collaboration with the security agencies to reduce gender based violence in the country to give equal rights to both male and female especially in accessing employment.
