Adaklu chiefs bemoan activities of nomadic herds, water challenges; call for gov't intervention

President of the Adaklu Traditional Council, Togbega Gbogbi Atsa V, has called on government to construct a pasture bank in the Adaklu area, to help put an end to the menace of nomadic cattle in the area.

According to Togbega, activities of nomadic herds, leading to the destruction of water bodies and farmlands, has the potential of undermining the peace of the district.

Togbega made the call while addressing a durbar of Chiefs and students in Adaklu this afternoon, during a visit of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday.

He said "I wish to highlight the menace of nomadic cattle, grazing in Adaklu -which our people are struggling to contain. This problem arises out of availability of large pasture of land in the area. We would be grateful if your government would consider creating a pasture bank in Adaklu, as done in Afram Plains, to help solve this problem which has the potential of undermining the peace in the district."

While recounting the benefits Adaklu has enjoyed under the various governments, especially with regards to efforts made to solve water challenges in the district, Togbega however noted that the problem still persists.

"Your Excellency, having highlighted the various positive developments in our Traditional Area, in the last few years, we, however, wish to bring to your attention some major problems we face as a people.

Firstly, good and safe drinking water continues to elude our people. Many efforts have been made by various governments to solve the problem including the recent Spanish water project which tried to provide mechanized borehole to the communities," he added.

He lamented that the situation worsens during the dry seasons and appealed to government to expedite work on the 5-District Water Project at Adidome to end their perennial water challenges.

"We wish to appeal to Your Excellency, to consider the continuation of the 5-district water project at Adidome, which our district is supposed to be one of the beneficiaries, as a lasting solution to our perennial water problems."

Togbega Gbogbi Atsa V also called on government to turn their attention to improving the state of road network in the Adaklu district; since government has declared 2020 as a year of roads and also, help improve the infrastructure capacity of the Adaklu Senior High School.

In his response, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo assured the Traditional Council of his commitment to working to address the challenges as highlighted by Togbega.

He also called on the leadership of the Fulani (herdsmen), to continue to exhibit a high sense of responsibility in their activities, so as to maintain the peace and tranquility they have been enjoying on the lands of the Adaklu Traditional Area.
