The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has officially ended rescue operations at the scene of a building collapse that claimed one life and left several others injured at a two-storey apartment building near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket at Adentamn New Site during a downpour on Wednesday, June 4, 2026.

Speaking to the media, on June 4, 2026, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Officer, ACFO II Rashid K Nisawu, said emergency responders successfully rescued a number of trapped victims and retrieved the body of one deceased person from the rubble.

The victims who were trapped in the building were identified as Margaret Kpeli, Fred Atagba, Solomon Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda.

Family of 5, 4 Rescued, Mom’s Body Trapped: GNFS gives update on Adenta storey building collapse

"We had a distress call at exactly 18:07, the rapid intervention vehicle got here and realized that it was a building that collapsed. So, we had to call in firemen from Madina, Adenta, Legon, Abelenkpe... When we got here, five people were trapped but we managed to rescue four. And the last person was the person that we just brought out, a female who was left under the wreckage.

"...We managed to rescue the person and retrieve the body. And the body has been handed over to the police to be sent to the morgue", he stated.

ACFO II Nisawu explained that rescue teams deliberately avoided using heavy excavators at the initial stages of the operation to prevent a secondary collapse that could endanger both victims and rescuers.

"Normally, when a building collapses, we do not immediately deploy excavators because they can trigger another collapse. We left the debris largely undisturbed and bored holes through the wreckage to locate and rescue survivors," he said.

The strategy, he noted, enabled firefighters to safely rescue those who were still alive beneath the debris before eventually retrieving the deceased victim.

With all identified victims accounted for, the Service has called off the rescue operation.

"At this point, the rescue has been called off, and we can say the operation has ended," ACFO II Nisawu stated.
