A new police station built at Adiebeba in Kumasi at a cost of GH¢160,000.00 has been inaugurated with a pledge by the leadership to ensure that the Service is accountable and maintains high standards of professionalism.
Commissioner of Police (COP) James Oppong Buanuh, Director-General in charge of services at the Ghana Police Service said they would insist on discipline, best practices and proper conduct to win the public confidence and support.
The station has a Charge Office, criminal investigations section and office of the station officer, cells, toilet and bathroom. There is also a housing component to provide decent accommodation for personnel posted to the station. It was solely financed by a Kumasi-based businessman and estate developer, Mr. Kwasi Appiah, popularly known as “K-Appiah”.
COP Oppong-Buanuh warned against the practice where crime suspects were held in police cells beyond the legally permitted time and said offending officers should not expect protection from the Police Administration.
They would take personal responsibility for any such breaches of the law. He assured the people of adequate security protection through intensified patrols and visibility.
He, however, encouraged the public to support them with useful leads to help arrest and bring criminals to book.
He said all should desire to collaborate with the security agencies to fight crime.
COP Oppong-Buanuh praised Mr. Appiah for his extraordinary gesture towards complementing government’s efforts at bringing security to the door steps of the people.
DCOP Augustine Gyening, the Ashanti Regional Commander, said the inauguration of the station would undoubtedly reduce crime in the area.
Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Yaw Adusei, said it was refreshing that some individuals were responding to the needs of the police and described that as a positive development.
Mr. Appiah said security must be appreciated as a shared responsibility. Alhaji Mohammed Amponsah, another businessman, used the occasion to present a cheque of GH¢55,000.00 for the purchase of a vehicle for the station.
