Adorye challenges PRETAG’s role in teachers’ negotiations

United Party (UP), Director of Field Operations, Hopeson Adorye, has challenged the participation of the Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) in negotiations with the Education Ministry and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) over teachers’ conditions of service.

Adorye said the association should not be treated as a legitimate party to the negotiations until, its change of name, from the Concerned Teachers Coalition (CCT) has been formally accepted by the relevant authorities.

According to a report by adomonline.com on September 29, 2026, Adorye argued that the matter concerning the name change is currently before the court, raising questions about PRETAG’s standing in the ongoing discussions on behalf of teachers.

“It used to be CCT, and the PRETAG name change is in court. Labour says until the court or the Attorney General accepts the name change, it is foreign to them,” he indicated.

He therefore questioned why the association would be allowed to negotiate with the Education Ministry and the FWSC when its name change remains unresolved.

“So why should PRETAG sit with the Education Ministry and Fair Wages to negotiate for people?” he asked, describing the situation as ‘an illegality.’

Adorye also called on teachers to check their payslips to determine whether their August union dues were deducted under the CCT name or the PRETAG name.

He said this would help establish whether the appropriate name was being used in the deduction and ensure that the process surrounding the association’s name change was properly followed.

“Check their payslip and check whether even if August dues were paid in the name of CCT or PRETAG. They should make sure the right thing is done with regard to the name change,” he stated.
