Adwoa Safo Foundation donates to Osu Children’s Home

The Adwoa Safo Foundation (ASF), on Friday, June 19, 2020, made a donation to the Osu Children’s Home in Labone, Accra, in line with the NGO’s mandate to provide for the needs of the underprivileged, including children in orphanages.

The donation was undertaken on behalf of the Founder of the Foundation, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, the Minister of State in Charge of Public Procurement and MP for Dome Kwabenya who has intrinsic interest and passion for improving the lives of women and children.

Items donated included groceries and toiletries such as boxes of biscuits, cartons of milk, cooking oil, boxes of bottled water, bags of rice, detergents, wipes, tissues, sugar, clothes, beverages, toilet rolls and preserved tomatoes to the Home for the children’s usage. The items were received on behalf of the children by the managers of the facility who were led by Ms. Yvonne Norman, the Assistant Director of the Home.

Ms. Norman and her team were very happy and appreciated the kind gesture by the Adwoa Safo Foundation. In her speech, Ms. Norman stated emphatically that not all children under the care of the Home have lost both parent or either one of them and explain further that in Ghana, children come to live in orphanages because of poverty, abuse, violence, parental illness and disability among other reasons.

She bemoaned the fact that though the essence of orphanages is not necessarily to provide for children for the rest of their lives, her outfit largely ends up doing that because members of the children’s nuclear or extended families or even foster parents hardly come to take back or adopt the children as expected. The job of orphanages, according to her, is basically to link the vulnerable families or children to people with resources, but unfortunately, same is not happening of late, and the children end up growing to become adults whiles still living in the orphanage.

This development has huge budgetary implications on the limited resources of the orphanage. Accordingly, Ms Norman, while thanking the Adwoa Safo Foundation for the kind gesture, appealed to other philanthropists and indeed members of the general public to come to the aid of the orphanage in order to enable the Home discharge its obligation to the vulnerable.

To this end, she mentioned some of the items the orphanage needs the most, which she said, form part of their “wish list” including independent living support for older children, items like baby formula, diapers, disposable gloves, pull ups, adult diapers, cash, computers, printers, photocopier, psychiatric drugs and protein foods. Ms. Norman added that the orphanage needs support to complete a store house and that attaining this will be highly appreciated.

The Adwoa Safo Foundation assured the orphanage that their priorities have been noted and that same will be taken into consideration when making future donations to them. Such gesture, the Foundation said, was consistent with its mission and vision.

The NGO was founded by the MP for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo with the primary aim of providing livelihood support to vulenerable groups in society particuallrly women and children as well as persons living with disability with the view to tackling inequality and promoting inclusiveness in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
