The Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus of the Parliament of Ghana, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, has condemned in no uncertain terms, the barbaric assault of a policeman on a nursing mother who had gone to the Midland Savings and Loans Company to withdraw her money.

In a statement signed and released in Accra by Hon. Safo who is also the deputy Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Saturday, she “I want to condemn unequivocally and in no uncertain terms the barbaric act of this police corps and to urge the Inspector General of Police to take every step to ensure that this police man is dealt with punitively according to the law”.

She added “As a mother I wept uncontrollably watching this poor nursing mother being subjected to severe beatings by this police man at a time when she was carrying nearly three months old baby. What is even more distasteful was the fact that onlookers including officials of Midland Savings and loans watched proceedings closely without any intervention to save this woman from the torrential blows of this police Corp”.

The Policeman who allegedly assaulted the said customer of the Midland Savings and Loans in a banking hall has been arrested on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.

The police officer is currently being held at the Police Headquarters assisting investigations.

There has been public outrage after footage of the said Police officer in uniform beating to pulp the helpless nursing mother emerged on social media platforms.

The 1:26 seconds amateur video shows the officer, who had a gun with him, hitting the woman on the head repeatedly and slapping her at a point, despite a desperate attempt by an unidentified man to separate them.

The woman was seen shouting amidst desperate attempt to free herself from the grips of the officer.

Meanwhile, the Management of Midland Savings and Loans has condemned the assault of the customer by the Police officer.

In a statement issued by the Bank after the incident said the case has been reported to the police to get justice for the customer.

But the Minister of State in charge of Public Procurement commenting whilst congratulating the Inspector General of Police for his swift action on the matter, she further urged the number one Constable of the land to follow up the case to its logical conclusion, ensuring adequate justice for the woman.

Further to that, she wants the management of Midland Savings and Loans Company to ensure that the appropriate compensation package is prepared for the nursing mother.
