The Afadzato South branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has noted with utmost sadness and disappointment comments made by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo over the weekend in Nigeria about the reckless borrowings of his government in the last 20 months of his reign.

The President was reported to have said at an entrepreneurial forum organized by the Tony Elumelo Foundation in Nigeria that “We will borrow money; everybody borrows money… the United States of America is one of the biggest debtors in the world. So borrowing money is not necessarily a betrayal of the concept of independence. The key for us in borrowing money is that we borrow money to create assets that will allow us to pay the money back. That is the key…If we borrow the money and use it properly it is an asset for us in expanding our economy and infrastructure.”

Below are excerpts of the statement:

The mind-boggling question which obviously must be answered by the President and his apparatchiks is "since when have they realised borrowing is no more a lazy man’s approach?"

Liars they say; “need to have good memories” The president must have good memories of what he promised Ghanaians as opposition leader, he must have good memories of how he and his then-running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia chastised his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama on borrowing. President Akufo Addo must have good memories of how he boasted of not borrowing because of the abundance of resources in Ghana. Now, what has become of him?

The Afadzato South constituents cannot but to agree with the former President, John Dramani Mahama who recently said “During my tenure, they said I borrowed ¢40 billion within four years but within two years this government has borrowed up to ¢50 billion. Where is the evidence of how the money was used?”

The assertion by the former President on the evidence of the usage of monies borrowed by the NPP government is nothing but the whole truth. The massive infrastructure development witnessed during the NDC era by the new Afadzato South district under the able leadership of Hon. Angela Alorwu-Tay (DCE) and Hon. J.Z Amenowode (MP) has been very remarkable and cannot in any way be compared to what we are seeing under lawyer Wisdom Seneadza led Afadzato South District.

We have to put on record that despite the huge sums of monies borrowed by the NPP government in just 2 years, there is absolutely nothing to show for it in the Afadzato South District.

The said statement supposedly made by the President on borrowing is absurd because it’s in sharp contrast to what candidate Akufo Addo promised the good people of Ghana in 2016.

It is a known fact that no one forced Nana Addo, the then opposition leader to make such mouth-watering promises. What beats our imagination, however, is what could have possibly motivated the veteran politician to make promises he knew he cannot keep?

Is it to lie to Ghanaians to become President at all cost? Well, coming events they say cast their own shadows.

The president’s action smacks of betrayal of the trust reposed in him by the Ghanaian people.

By this statement, we are calling on Mr. President to eat the humble pie and render an unqualified apology to the former president of the Republic, H.E John Dramani Mahama and the good people of Ghana for betraying them on borrowing.

Also, we want to urge the Afadzato South electorates and Ghanaians at large to be resolute in the face of the harsh economic conditions bedevilling them for it is said that “no condition is permanent”. Stand up and let’s take collective action and send the lazy and super incompetent Nana Addo led NPP government back into perpetual opposition come 2020.
