The Director of Conflict Resolution at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has slammed the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin over his demeanour over the ruling by the Speaker of Parliament.

During a panel discussion on TV3’s NewDay, Abraham Amaliba described the earlier injunction filed by Afenyo-Markin at the Supreme Court as unnecessary.

According to him, the Majority Leader wanted to stay the hands of Parliament.

“Afenyo-Markin behaves like he has the birthright to become the Majority Leader. That is not his birthright. He needs to be told. Look at how he behaved yesterday. See how he preempted the speaker’s ruling. He knew what was right and what the speaker’s ruling would be. Because if he didn’t know, he wouldn’t have gone to court.” He disclosed

Lawyer Amaliba further emphasized that the parliament is running the country with a separation of powers hence no court can stop the workings of parliament.

Lawyer Amaliba reiterated that although Afenyo-Markin filed for an injunction, there was no way the court could stop the speaker from doing his job in parliament.

“You run to court to file an injunction to stop parliament from working. You were the Majority Leader, you were supposed to promote the integrity and supremacy of Parliament” Abraham Amaliba argued.

It would be recalled that after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin declared 4 seats vacant in parliament, Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin and also the leader of the NPP caucus in Parliament asserted that Speaker Alban Bagbin was setting the House on fire.

According to him, the Speaker did not have the right to make a constitutional interpretation, as that was the mandate of the Supreme Court.
