Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency Alexander Afenyo-Markin has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Education to dissolve the Academic Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) with immediate effect.

The lawmaker, in whose constituency the university is located, says the tenure of the Council elapsed way back in 2013.

He contends that the Council has been taking decisions, nonetheless.

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed these sentiments and the consequent appeal on TV3’s New Day on Monday, May 16.

He says that the Council’s recent decisions like the award of degrees and the appointment of a vice chancellor have all been made in contravention of Section VIII of Act 679 (2004).

‘Embarassing’

The private legal practitioner hinted that some members of the public are considering a legal action against the university and that could have an “embarrassing” implication for the university.

“Mr President, the Chief of Staff and Ministry of Education, quickly rectify the situation and appoint a new Council to quickly run the university.

“It is illegal a Council remains in office after its term of office has expired for over three years.”
