Afigya Kwabre district showcases projects

he Afigya Kwabre District Assembly has, since 2009, embarked upon 86 development projects since its creation.

The projects, which cut across all sectors such as educational, economic, health and roads, spans from the construction of classroom blocks to teachers and nurses quarters, health centers, water systems and market stalls.

The Assembly is also constructing a shopping mall at the cost of GH¢340.000 at Afrancho, and a new GH¢720,000 ultra-modern district education directorate offices, funded by USAID, is about 95% completed, while the District Chief Executive’s (DCE’s) bungalow is being funded from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) at the cost of GH¢250,000 and is 85% complete.

Mr. Kaakyire Oppong Kyekyeku, District Chief Executive of the area, who disclosed this during a working visit by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, indicated that a total of 49 projects under education alone had been initiated.

He said 38 classroom blocks had been completed for use, while the rest are at advanced stages of completion.The DCE indicated that six water projects had been completed in various communities to give access to potable drinking water, while various roads have been resurfaced and reshaped.

On the economic front, the DCE said various markets and stalls had been constructed in communities such as Kodie, Boamang and Akom, while a proposed modern market is to be constructed at Afrancho to empower the majority of their women and traders in the informal sector.

He said the Business and Advisory Center has also embarked on entrepreneurial training programmes for some selected participants to start small businesses to earn a living.

Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku said the district had also made a steady progress in sanitation, by constructing 300 household latrines and 33 KVIP for various schools, and 20-seater WC toilets constructed in Denase and Ejuratia.

He said the Public Private Partnership (PPP) committee had approved a number of applications from private developers and businessmen for the construction of various WC toilets in some communities such as Buoho and Kodie.

The Ashanti Regional Minister stated that the successful implementation of government business, particularly, at the local level, required good working relations among stakeholders of development, including the traditional authorities (Nananom), District Chief Executive, staff-technocrats, assembly members and all other interested parties in the districts.

He said the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, appointees and representatives of the people must learn to cultivate good human relations qualities of co-operation, empathy, respect, love and show much concern to be able to meet the aspirations of their people.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Afigya Kwabre Assembly, the Regional Minister has presented start up equipment and capital to women who were given training in confectionaries under the Business Advisory Center to enable them start their own businesses.
