African First Ladies meet in Accra for 2nd AU Girls Summit on ending child marriage

First Ladies from Ghana, Liberia, Niger and Sierra Leone will from Friday, November 23, 2018 meet in Accra to discuss and effectively map out new methods and approaches towards ending child marriages.

The summit is being held under the auspices of the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA).

The two day summit will also include high level expertise and Technical advisors from, Mozambique, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It will also witness High Level Panel Discussions on Experience sharing on child marriage in particular provision of services (education, psychosocial and SRH) for girls’ reintegration back into school and society and other discussions on addressing the psychosocial trauma of child marriage, FGM and other Harmful Traditional Practices.

Also to be discussed are the related issues on Gender based violence: Addressing the exploitation of children particularly in conflict zones as well as Exploring the vulnerability of child migrants and combatting child trafficking.

Participants will end the first day of the summit with a Parallel OAFLA session on ending Female Genital Mutilation and Child Marriage which is expected to lead to the drafting of a communique.

The second day of the summit will begin with a workshop put together by the International Planned Parenthood Federation and facilitated by Dr. Eunice Brookman- Amissah on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.

A review of the of final draft of the OAFLAD Strategic plan by First Ladies and Technical Advisers will be done on 24th of November to climax the summit.

The 1st summit was organized in Lusaka, Zambia last year.
