African health managers urged to sacrifice

Koforidua, Nov 16, GNA - Dr Obeng Apori, the Director of the Koforidua Regional Hospital, has appealed to managers of health institutions in Africa to sacrifice for the good of the people if they are to succeed as managers.

He said even if they did not benefit directly from their sacrifice, their children and future generations would enjoy from the sacrifice that they had made.

Dr Apori said this to a delegation of 12 Sierra Leonean councillors and health administrators led by Dr Prince A. J. Roberts, the Sierra Leone Deputy Director General of Medical Services, who called on him to learn how the Ghanaian health system works at the local level. He briefed the delegation about the administrative structure of the hospital, the relationship between the hospital and the municipal assembly, the community and incentives provided by the management of the hospital to its workers.

Dr Apori said ''sometimes, managing hospitals in the face of political pronouncements was difficult but one has to face the reality and take bold decisions to ensure that the hospital does not collapse but continue to provide service to the people." Dr Roberts expressed his delegation's appreciation for the achievements of the Koforidua Regional Hospital and what the group had learned from the few hours of interaction.
